I have a sense that dictators are weakened when the world observes other dictators facing consequences, which may be all it takes to want to shelter them.

On Saturday morning Bolsonaro is arrested for tampering with his electronic ankle monitor, something he did late on Friday but was caught in time.
Trump says he spoke with Bolsonaro on Friday and that they were going to meet. Then the reporters says he was arrested. He gets surprised that Bolsonaro was arrested and says it was too bad...
Breaking an ankle bracelet and fleeing an international manhunt is a risky endeavour! Although I suppose world leaders tend to be risk takers. "I deserve the top job, and I'm going to scratch and claw my way to get it" isn't exactly a well-balanced thought.

I think Trump already raised tariffs on Brazil imports because Bosolnaro was brought to justice.
